The 10 baccarat card values, from 0 to 9

A baccarat hand has two or three cards. The hand’s value is the units digit of the sum, which is arithmetic modulo ten. The ten cards that make each value are below.

1. Value 0: a ten, jack, queen or king, or any pair that totals 10, such as 4 and 6.
2. Value 1: an ace, or a hand such as 5 and 6 (11 counts as 1).
3. Value 2: a 2, or 9 and 3 (12 counts as 2).
4. Value 3: a 3, or 6 and 7 (13 counts as 3).
5. Value 4: a 4, or 9 and 5 (14 counts as 4).
6. Value 5: a 5, or 2 and 3.
7. Value 6: a 6, or 4 and 2.
8. Value 7: a 7, or 3 and 4.
9. Value 8: an 8, or 5 and 3. This is a natural.
10. Value 9: a 9, or 4 and 5. This is a natural and the highest hand.

If the player or the banker has 8 or 9 on the first two cards, the round ends there. Otherwise the drawing rules below say whether a third card is dealt.

How the values decide a third card

The rules are fixed: the dealer does not choose and neither do you. The player hand acts first. With a total of 0 to 5 it draws a third card; with 6 or 7 it stands.

If the player stood, the banker follows the same rule: draw on 5 or less, stand on 6 or 7. If the player drew, the banker’s choice depends on the banker’s total and the player’s third card, as in the table.

A worked round: the player holds 2 and 3, a total of 5, and the banker holds a 4 and a king, a total of 4. Neither has a natural, so the player draws and gets a 6, which makes 11 and a hand value of 1. The banker’s total of 4 draws when the player’s third card is 2 to 7, so the banker draws too. A player’s third card of 9 would have left the banker standing on 4.

Baccarat banker: the bet, the commission and the tie

Player and banker are the names of the two hands, not of people. You can bet on either hand or on a tie. A winning banker bet pays 19 to 20, which is even money with a 5% commission on the win, and the saved rule source puts its house edge below the player bet’s.

On a ₱100 banker win the commission is ₱5 and you receive ₱95 profit. On a ₱100 player win you receive ₱100. On a ₱100 tie bet you receive ₱800, and the banker and player bets stay in place for the next round.
