A SIM swap scam takes over your mobile number by tricking your carrier, so the scammer’s phone gets your calls, texts and verification codes. The 888JILI registration form on 6 October 2026 asked for no mobile number, but the wallet you pay from and the Google or Apple account on your phone probably do. This page shows how the scam works, the red flags, and what you can check yourself.

SIM swap scam: how it works, step by step

The US Federal Trade Commission describes the scheme like this.

  1. The scammer calls your carrier and says your phone was lost or damaged.
  2. They ask the carrier to activate a new SIM card on your number, in a phone they own.
  3. If the carrier believes the story, your texts, calls and data go to their phone.
  4. Accounts that send codes by text now send them to the scammer.
  5. With your login details, they can try your bank, e-mail or social media and change passwords to lock you out.

SIM swap meaning in one line

The SIM swap meaning is exactly that: a SIM card, which identifies you to the network, is replaced with another one that belongs to someone else. Your number stays the same; the control moves.

Red flags that your number is being swapped

These are the signals named by the FTC.

Red flagWhat you seeDo this now
Sudden loss of serviceNo data, no texts, no callsContact your carrier immediately
Carrier noticeA message that your SIM was activated on a new deviceCall the carrier on a number you know is real
Requests for personal informationCalls, e-mails or texts asking for account detailsDo not reply; contact the company yourself
Lock-outsPasswords changed, codes you did not requestSecure your accounts from another device

A flood of codes you did not request is a related warning; the OTP page explains why you never pass a code on.

What protects the number your accounts are tied to

  1. Set a PIN or password on your cellular account. The FTC says this could help protect against unauthorized changes; check your carrier’s website for how.
  2. Limit the personal information you post online, such as your full name, address and phone number, since answers to security questions can be found there.
  3. Use an authentication app or security key where a site offers one. The FTC notes text verification may not stop a SIM swap.
  4. Use Google prompts if you have a Google account; Google says prompts can help protect against SIM swap and other phone number hacks. The 2FA page has the steps.
  5. Never reply to calls or texts asking for account details.

What Philippine law says about your SIM

Republic Act No. 11934, the SIM Registration Act dated 10 October 2022, sets these rules for your SIM. Read the full text on lawphil.net for the exact wording.

Rule in the ActWhat it says
RegistrationSIMs are registered with the telecommunications entity before activation
CostRegistration is at no cost to the end-user
Loss of the SIMThe end-user must immediately inform the carrier
DeactivationThe carrier deactivates the SIM within 24 hours from the report

The Act does not name SIM swap scams, so it does not replace the protections above.

What to do first if your phone goes dark

Problem

Your phone loses service and a notice says your SIM was activated elsewhere

Fix

Contact your carrier through a number or site you know is real and ask for the number to be secured. Once it is back, change your account passwords, then check your wallet and bank for charges you did not make.

Problem

You cannot sign in to your wallet because the code goes to a number you no longer control

Fix

Use the wallet’s own help to recover the account. The Maya wallet page lists that wallet’s published tiers; sign-in help comes from Maya’s own pages.

For the rest of the phone set-up, return to the play in browser set-up page.
