888JILI Scatter symbol Explained — Why Position Does Not Matter

The term Scatter symbol is exact, and the blurry way people use it is behind most of the confusion.

Scatter symbol — This symbol pays or triggers a feature no matter where it lands.

What Scatter symbol actually means

Sitting on a payline is not required of scatters, unlike regular symbols. When a stated number of them land anywhere on the grid, the usual result is a feature round, most often free spins, and there is sometimes a direct payout too. Rather than following a convention, the number required is set per game and stated in the paytable.

A worked example

Where the trigger probability for free spins on three scatters is fixed per spin, the chance on spin 201 is precisely the chance on spin one, even after 200 spins without a trigger. The machine keeps no memory of the drought and has no mechanism by which it could keep one.

The common misreading

The belief that scatters become ‘due’ after a dry run is a widely held one. They do not. Every spin stands alone, which means a long gap since the last trigger does nothing to the probability of the next one. This belief is why players chase a feature that is no closer than it was an hour ago; it is the gambler’s fallacy applied to a specific symbol.

Substituting for anything is not what a scatter does, and it is not a wild. For the overwhelming majority of games, a trigger requires more than two scatters plus a wild. Scatters on many titles set off the feature without paying anything directly, which means it is not always a payout symbol.

Using it in practice

The paytable carries the required number of scatters and their award, and these differ across games that otherwise look identical. A check costs nothing, yet it prevents the most common misread of a spin result. It lands more easily next to free spins explained, which tend to show up in the same set of terms.

You will meet Scatter symbol and terms like it across the game pages on this site, and if a studio has not released the number behind one, the page says that outright rather than copying a figure from a comparison site. Which is the reason a handful of spec tables on this site have empty cells.
